Decline to Mediocrity

I remember when talent shows in the high school would draw in hundreds of people to the point that it would be hard to find a seat where you could enjoy the show.  This was three years ago, when I was a freshman.  When there was an awesome performance, I’d be pretty irked because everyone would be standing up, trying to get a better view of the act, thereby giving the people behind him or her a hard time.  It was a wave of frustration.  But when you did catch a glimpse of the performances, you’d be awestruck.

Now, the auditorium is only about a quarter full, which is proportional to the quality of the acts.  I mean, one can argue that the audience doesn’t really know what kind of acts they’ll see, so it’s not like anyone can prove that the higher the quality of the acts, the more people will come.

Anyway, my point is that the acts this year are pretty dull, not to mention bad.  Some might have just wanted five minutes of fame, not that being seen by twenty people would gain them acclaim.

However, there was one act that I truly enjoyed.  Now you’re going to have to believe me when I say I’m totally unbiased with this opinion, but my sister’s performance with her dance crew was good.  I don’t know.  Something about it made me smile.

Or it can just be an older person mentality sort of thing.  I was a naive freshman, and maybe I was easy to please.  Now that I’ve seen more kinds of talents ranging from terrible to epic, I’m more critical.

So yea, where’s all the talent in our school?  Are we really just talentless?

Bitter Work

This week, we have two talent shows back-to-back—one on Thursday, one on Friday.  The first one is actually a competition between each class, each one having three acts.   The second one is just a show.

Today’s the dress rehearsal for the first show, aptly called “Battle of the Classes.”  Of course, I had to work for Stage Tech.  It’s definitely becoming bitter work.

How to Host…

…as told by Jeremy.

  • Look cool (consult most fashionable friend—Tram)
  • Get hyper
  • Get everyone else hyper
  • Make fun of co-hosts
  • Bring some funny props
  • Wear a tutu
  • Be funny
  • Introduce acts
  • Don’t be nervous

The talent show was probably the worst ever in the four years I’ve been in high school.  There were some decent performances, but in general, it was just garbage compared to some of the epic ones from a couple of years ago.  In addition, there were few acts.  And only a measly quarter of the auditorium was filled with people, compared to full houses from a few years ago.  It’s pretty sad.  It had to be my senior year.

At least, I had fun hosting.  I’ve wanted to do it ever since sophomore year, and I was really excited when I requested to be a host two weeks ago.  I got the job and shared it with two others.  Yea, I probably wouldn’t have been able to do it by myself.  In the end, I think I had some decent material.  People laughed.  That’s what I was after.

Naturally, I was nervous though.  Like I always am.  I’m more extroverted than introverted, but I just have a tendency to feel shaky while speaking in front of huge crowds.  (If you can even call that audience a crowd)  I can usually talk to small groups whenever I want, but when it comes to really big groups, it’s a bit harder.

It’s probably because I care too much about what people think.  With big crowds, there are more people that can possibly think negatively about you.  You know what I mean?

Anyway, either way, I had fun.  I would want to do it again and see how I would act in a bigger crowd.  There should be another talent show in the spring, and hopefully, I can get that show too.

Around 8:00 pm.

I’m spending way too much time in school.

Student-Faculty Volleyball Game practice with the student team.  Then, talent show dress rehearsal.  Hosting tomorrow.

Ah, too involved?
